Andes

Venezuela claims the northernmost reaches of the mighty Andes Mountains, which spans nearly the entire continent of South America from north to south. This region encompasses the states of Merida, Tachira and Trujillo. Picturesque and rich in tradition, this region hosts a myriad of environments from dense, tropical cloudforests to rugged snow-capped peaks. Merida, the capital of the Andes, is a bustling university town, which is swarming with resting places, local markets and bustling eateries- very much indicative of Venezuela's modern culture.

To a nature lover's delight, the forests support an amazing array of bird and plantlife. This is where orchids, bromeliads and heliconias bloom in profusion, providing a natural habitat for hummingbirds and the beautiful Andean cock-of -the-rock bird.

At higher altitudes, unusual fauna, cirques and moraines dominate the glacial landscapes. The rich hinterland is brimming with icy rivers, streams and lakes where you can possibly hook up with trouts and other fishes. Carpeted in gorgeous valleys of evergreen and deciduous forest and lush alpine meadows, the Andean region is a feast for the senses.

It's also in the heart of the Andes Range where you'll find the only place in the country that has snow-covered peaks throughout the year. This is where you'll ride the world's highest and longest cable car or teleferico- 12.5 km long. The region is ideal for excursions and mountain sports, and a set off point for the exciting treks of Los Pueblos and Los Nevados.
