Antarctica
Antarctica is perhaps the most unique experience for any traveler. Far away from human settlement, multitudes of penguins and seals trod the great white continent. This last unspoiled frontier of the world took a lot of time for exploration. Although the Greeks held the idea that such a land existed, it was the European explorer Captain James Cook, who embarked upon the first voyage towards Antarctica. Cook's attempt was futile and after much efforts it was an American sealer Captain John Davis who finally landed on the continent for the first time ever in 1821.
Today, there are many exciting options for exploring the white continent. If you have less time, you can fly by jet over Antarctica from Australia for a full day of aerial sightseeing. However, most visitors prefer to cruise down for the real adventure. Besides, it's also possible to arrange Antarctic scuba diving, kayaking, mountain climbing, and South Pole trekking adventures. Exploring Antarctica and its neighboring chains of islands by ship gives you fantastic opportunities for whale, seal, and sea bird watching. A sight of Emperor and King Penguin rookeries is a feast for the eyes.
Since Antarctica doesn't have a population of its own, its culture is influenced by those who work here as a part of various research programmes. Temporary residents generaly belong to the three major groups- the civilian contractors, the scientists, and the workers of NSF. Parties and cultural events are frequently organized for their entertainment.
Don't be surprised by the sizzling nightlife of this chilliest place! The Erebus Club, Gallagher's Pub, and the Coffee Shop at McMurdo station are just like any other night spot in the world. The smaller and quieter Scott Base pub is highly sought after. If you want to pick up a keepsake, you can buy imprinted T-shirts, coffee mugs etc from some stations, else buy seal or other skin products at onboard stores of some ships.
