Cabrits National Park

Although it's no more the age when sailors left goats to run wild on the Cabrits for fresh meat for subsequent visits, today, this scenic peninsula is frequented by visitors for the site of Fort Shirley- a large 18th century British garrison that once housed 600 soldiers. You'll be impressed by the engineering aspects of the fort. While native, black volcanic rock was used as the primary stone, the cement used as mortar was prepared from coral limestone collected on the nearby reefs.

Apart from the historic ruins, some reconstructed and others hidden away in the jungle, the Cabrits National Park is a wonderful playground for the nature lovers and marine life enthusiasts. The wetland that connects Cabrits to the mainland is a breeding ground for migratory birds. Visit during and you'll see small flocks of egrets.

The marine sanctuary in Douglas Bay, located on the northern side of Cabrits, is popular for its underwater trail that facilitates snorkeling and diving. Cabrits National Park is located on the northwestern coast of Dominica with its area divided as 1,313 acres of upland and 1,053 acres of marine or underwater park.
