Christ the Redeemer

The stunning white 38 meters tall statue of Jesus, standing with outstretched and welcoming arms, is perched atop the Corcovado mountain overlooking the city Rio de Janeiro. Christ the Redeemer has been designated one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The left arm points to the Rio de Janeiro's north zone (zona norte), the right to the south zone (zona sul), while the saintly perch offers spectacular views of Ipanema, the Maracana soccer stadium and the Serra do Órgãos mountain range.

Designed by Brazilian Heitor da Silva Costa and created by French sculptor Paul Landowski, it took five years to complete the statue and was inaugurated in 1931. Visit the chapel at base of the statue.

To access the site of the statue, you need to go to Rua Cosme Velho 513. This is where you'll buy tickets for the small red train that takes you uphill. While you're on the train, you can breathtaking sights of the Atlantic rainforest as well as other stunning glimpses of Rio from many different angles.
