Another attractive destination is Guayaquil, the most populous city and a bustling metropolis. The small, compact city of Cuenca is a must for history and culinary buffs; before the Spanish arrived, this was the second-most important city in the Inca empire. The city also boasts several excellent restaurants serving Ecuadorian specialties unique to this region.
