Although the nation's breadbasket, as the Midwest is affectionately referred to as, appears to be a fantastic patchwork quilt of cornfields speckled with an occasional barn or factory, it truly represents the essence of America's history and cultural diversity. One of America's greatest Presidents, Abraham Lincoln, grew up and had lived here in Illinois and Indiana. The Midwest is rich in scenic beauty, with its lakes, rivers and islands offering numerous opportunities for outdoor fun.

The covered bridges of Madison County, Iowa
Around 20 covered bridges were built in Madison County during the late 19th Century. They were covered to to help preserve the large flooring timbers, which were more expensive to replace than the lumber used to cover the bridge sides and roof!
