Djenne Mosque

The Grand mosque of Djenne is the largest mud-brick building in the world. Dominating the Old town of Djenne, the elegant structure that stands today was rebuilt in 1906-1909 on the ruins of the 13th century building and the design too was closely based on the original. The mosque incorporates the Islamic Architectural elements and the wooden spikes on its exterior wall are part of framework that supports its mud-brick structure. Djenne mosque is the world's largest mud-brick structure and is perhaps the best example of the classic Sudanese architecture.

Every year the residents of the town turn to to repair its massive structure at the Spring festival. The restoration work involves renewing the layer of mud and replacing it with a new and smooth layer of mud to cover the bricks. However, the non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the mosque, but you can still appreciate it's spectacular site from outside. Don't remember to carry you camera and capture the beautiful photograph's that will stay with you forever.
