Freedom Trail, Boston

If you are a history buff, you won't miss any chance to visit the Freedom Trail. Perhaps there's no better place than this to take walk down in history to the times of the American Revolution. Located in the the urban and cultural heart of North America, at the Freedom Trail, you'll know about the people and events that have shaped American history. Stroll down this incredible 2.5 mile red-brick walking trail that leads you through 16 nationally significant historic sites, including museums, churches, meeting houses, burial grounds, parks, and a ship.

The trail was established seven years after William Schofield, an editorial writer for the Boston Herald-Traveler, published this idea in 1951. A red brick or painted line connects the sites on the Trail and serves as a guide. If you're on fixed budget, take a self guided tour, else hire one of the many tours available through the National Park Service. These tours are led by well-trained park rangers who provide a summary of the Revolutionary War events related to each site. A fun way to tour the trial is a trolley tour, however, be sure to take the rider to as many sites as possible and disembark at selected stops.

The trial remains crowded on weekends and evenings. If you want to avoid the tourist hordes, you'll want to visit on weekdays, especially during the morning hours. Since the Freedom Trail is an outdoorsy tour, don't forget to consider weather conditions.
