Habana Vieja

Habana Vieja or old Havana is where you'll savor a slice of the Cuban history. Founded in 1519, this was an important naval port for the Spanish. It's pirate history is surely one of the most interesting aspects of a visit.

The area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982 and ever since there have been extensive renovation and restoration work going on. Stroll the historical, cultural, and architectural sites and find out how it feels to be in Cuba 200 years ago. Keen observers will take delight in scenes from the every day life.

Within Habana Vieja, the Catedral de San Cristobal and the legendary restaurant Bodeguita del Medio are two of the most interesting sights. Because it takes at least a half a day or even more for a proper exploration of the area, it's advisable to come here with some time at hand so that you are not rushing through the picturesque plazas and beautiful colonial buildings.

Be sure to stop by the Plaza de Armas. It served as the seat of power in Cuba for 400 years. This was the base for many Spanish Captains and Generals, US military governors and Cuban presidents. Today, it's home to an interesting book market.

During the years of prohibition in the United States, Habana Vieja turned into a playground for Americans who flocked here for the cheap liquor, gambling, and the flamboyant lifestyle.
