Irazu Volcano Park , Costa Rica

Soaring up to a height of 3432 meters above sea level, Irazu is the highest volcano in Costa Rica. Between 1723 and 1963, there have been at least 23 eruptions. Most visitors come here to see the spectacular lunar landscape of the park. Take a 3 hour horseback ride to the volcano or simply walk around the oak forest that surrounds the park.

There are two main craters in this park. At the "Diego de la Haya", you'll see an interesting lake, which is light green on some days and red at other times! There an other-worldly feel here, mainly contributed by its austere vegetation. The place experiences harsh temperatures averaging only 7.3 c or 45 F. Hence, it's advisable to carry at least a sweater and a windbreaker.

At times, the Irazu emits clouds of hydrogen and carbon dioxide gas at temperatures lower than 100 c. But don't worry! If you'll feel safe here as the seismic activity is monitored by various national and foreign institutions and visitors are informed beforehand.
