Maya Ruins - Lamanai

Lamanai is one of Belize's largest and most important ceremonial centers. Nestled along the New River Lagoon, the site is accessible only via riverboat cruises. Take an engaging 90 minute cruise through the Belizean jungle and feast on the sights of exotic birds and hydrophilic iguanas. The name Lamanai comes from the Maya term for "submerged crocodile". On a visit, you'll see numerous representations of the crocodile throughout this site.

The monumental architecture of temples and palaces will take you on a fantastic trip back to the Classic period. Lamanai is also home to the second largest pre-Classic structure in the Maya world. Climb up to the top of the temple panoramic views of the surrounding forest.

There is a spectacular 13-foot stone temple mask of a Maya king in front of one of these temples. This will be perfect for your camera! In addition to the Mayan structures, Lamanai is also known for the remains of two 16th century Christian churches. Browse the museum onsite for impressive artifacts depicting Maya gods and animals.
