Nariva Swamp

Trinidad`s most important natural reserve, Nariva Swamp is home to over 175 species of birds, including the West Indian Manatee and numerous species of parrots. What's more, you'll see Red Howler monkeys and Anacondas, too.

This stunning swamp is located on the east coast of Trinidad, immediately inland from the Manzanilla Bay and covers over 60 square kilometers. Besides birdwatching and wildlife spotting, you'll discover the historical importance of the Bush Wildlife Sanctuary, which is a field site for the Trinidad Regional Virus Laboratory. This 15 square km sanctuary has a diverse vegetation ranging from the palm marshes and hardwood forest to silk cotton trees and giant water lilies.

Also, visit the three small communities surrounding Nariva Swamp. Most of the inhabitants of these communities depend on the natural resources of the area for food. Nariva is the largest freshwater wetland in Trinidad and Tobago and has been designated a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention.
