National Historic Site, Fort El Morro

Stroll through the ramparts of this 400 year old fort. Explore tunnels and hidden passages, and ancient spiral staircases where Spanish soldiers protected their families against enemy invasions. Walk through the lawns which was a marching ground for soldiers, and watch the children flying their kites in the afternoon sea breeze.

Perched atop a high promontory overlooking the entrance to San Juan Bay, Fort San Felipe del Morro was a result of the efforts of scores of Spanish engineers over a period of more than 200 years. Today, it stands out as one of the largest Spanish-built forts in the Caribbean. El Morro is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as a National Historic Site in the US National Park Service.

The fort is just a 20 minute drive from the San Juan International Airport of San Juan. Ideally, you'll be required to hire a cab to reach there. Visitors can explore the fort everyday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm from June to November, and 9:00 am to 6:00 pm during the period from December to May. Whether you take a self-guided tour or a ranger-led walk, a trip to the fortification, the breathtaking garitas and the lookout towers is an unforgettable experience.
