Palacio Nacional, Guatemala City

The Palacio Nacional is one of the most important historic landmarks in Guatemala. Once a site of the presidential offices, this place has been restored into an art gallery where you'll see the stunning collections of renowned Guatemalan artists who moved here after the devastating earthquakes.

Located on the north side of Plaza Mayor, the museum building brags a striking blend of the Renaissance, neo-Classical and Baroque architectural styles. After all, such renowned national artists as Alfredo Galvez Suarez, Julio Urruela, Rodolfo Galiotti Torres and Carlos Rigalt lended their unique personal touches to this structure!

While the entrance stands out with Alfredo Galvez Suarez's murals depicting the history of the native city, the palace's ornate stairways and stained-glass windows are a pleasant contrast to this native city outside its walls. The museum is open daily from 9:00 am till noon and from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm. If you want to know more about the history of this magnificent building and its contents, a guided tour is highly recommended.
