Parque National Lauca, Arica

The 140,000 hectare Parque National Lauca in the Chilean Altiplano is undeniably a lifetime experience. Within the boundaries of this UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, you'll see several pre-mountain ranges and plateaus with prairies and volcanoes. A striking aspect of your visit will be the carefree herds of guanucos and vicuñas that you'll encounter.

Parque Nacional Lauca is located 176 Km east of Arica on the La Paz road. One can take a self guided tour or book a day trip with one of the tour operators. Hiking is possible and there are several exciting trails that will take you to the top of dormant volcanoes such as Guane Guane. Experienced climbers can ascend the 6320 m Parinacota volcano.

The park is open year round, but the best time to visit is between September and April. On a trip, don't miss the Chungara Lake, which is one of the highest lakes in the world!
