Scandinavian

Scandinavian is mainly represented by Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. The history of Scandinavia is the common history of these countries. Although the earliest evidence of human settlement in the region is older than 10,000 years, the Viking Age between AD 793 -1066, is the most striking period in its history. This was the age of the Viking raiders, who explored, plundered and colonized large parts of Europe, the Middle East, Northern Africa, and North America.

Scandinavian culture, today, could be described as a potpourri of several cultures, with major influences of medieval German and French sources. Interestingly, there are no traces of feudalism in these Nordic countries, as individual freedom is highly valued here. On a visit, you'll be amazed at the lively nightlife in these countries. There are countless places to go clubbing, as you'll find the hippest clubs in Copenhagen, Reykjavik and Stockholm.

Shopping options galore! Stockholm takes pride in being the fashion capital of Scandinavia. You can find the big, commercial chain stores, such as H&M, deluxe brands that can be found at Biblioteksgatan and Stureplan and a small cluster of design shops at Södermalm. An interesting aspect here is that the restaurant culture developed late in the Nordic countries. Through much of the 20th century, home cooking was the norm, and the natives used to be surprised by restaurant food. Be sure to sample their traditional cuisine, which is features a wide variety of fish and meat like pork and poultry, as well as beets, potatoes, cucumbers, baked and smoked apples.
