Tikal National Park

The Tikal National Park in the Peten region of Northern Guatemala is a spectacular archaeological gem with 222 square miles of jungle all around. The ceremonial center containing the superb temples, palaces and public squares can be accessed by means of ramps. If you're a culture enthusiast, you must visit this major cultural and natural preserve on your trip to Guatemala!

Home to some of the most fascinating archaeological remains of the ancient Maya Civilization, Tikal is the largest excavated site in the American continent. Archaeologists have discovered many mounds, which have been covered by a thick layer of jungle for over one thousand years. As restoration work continues, you'll marvel at these stunning sites of antiquity.

Tikal has several museums showcasing the Mayan history. Browse Tikal's most valuable ceramics and objects at the Morley Museum. There's another museum at the Visitor's Center, where you'll see the Stelae of Tikal.

Tikal's natural surroundings are a feast for the wildlife enthusiasts. You'll spot several animal species that include howler monkeys, anteaters, crocodiles, weasels and various species of birds. What's more, the park has three hotels within it's premises, plus exciting camp sites. While exploring, you can stop by the restaurants and small coffee shops, grab a bite and relax.
